Savannah Derby Devils supporting the Rape Crisis Center

Rape and other forms of sexually violent crimes continue to be an ever-present problem that affects hundreds in our community every year. More often than not the victims of these crimes do not report or speak about the incident due to fear, shock, disbelief, denial, anxiety, guilt and self blame. The Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire is well established as a comprehensive agency serving Savannah and the surrounding area. Each year, the Rape Crisis Center reaches approximately 700 victims including adults, children and the family members of victims. Their crisis intervention programs include SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) and SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners), which makes the reporting process much more responsive to the victim. An additional 15,000 people are reached each year with the various prevention programs for all ages, such as Good Touch/Bad Touch, Bullying Prevention, Rape Awareness, and self-defense classes. Through it all the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire is there to help. On July 14, the Savannah Derby Devils will host a double-header at the Savannah Civic Center. Throughout the two bouts raffle tickets will be sold and prizes will be awarded. All of the proceeds from the raffle sales will be donated to the Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire. Help these confident and empowering athletes as they look to give back to the community they skate for. In turn you’ll be helping others overcome a brutal and heinous crime and move forward with their lives. Hand me some RAID!

I am deathly afraid of cockroaches. It doesn’t matter if it’s a tiny baby one or full sized monster. I recall growing up in South Florida cockroaches or palmetto bugs as they are commonly known were a nuisances most homes had to deal with. I can trace this fear of the nasty and fully winged adult creature back to when I was about six years old. One of the perks of living in Miami as a child was that Walt Disney World was a mere four hour drive and, back then, quite affordable even for a family of four. School was out for the summer, dad had time off from work and mom had packed up the suitcases. The morning we were heading out mom woke us up around 5 a.m. It was still dark outside and I was barely awake but dressed. Dad sat me down on his recliner as he went off to wake up my brother and pack up the car. Mom was busy washing last minute dishes and prepping snacks for the road trip. Rocking back and forth I soon drifted into a wondrous slumber filled with Disney visions. Thoughts ...
